While a large amount of tropical rainforest has been cleared in Singapore, some of the primary rainforest, untouched by human activity, can be found in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Rainforest Biome

(Video source: National Geographic)

Rainforests get a lot of rain—between 50 and 260 inches every year and they receive more intense sun rays than you could find anywhere else on Earth! Most tropical rainforests are found in locations close to the equator like:

  •  Africa
  • Central America
  • parts of Asia

Plants in the Rainforest Biome

Rainforests are home to an incredible number of plants. The Amazon Rainforest alone provides a habitat for over 40,000 plant species! However, in a rainforest biome there is competition for sunlight and nutrients; plants have to adapt to find their place in the ecosystem.

Animals in the Rainforest Biome

The rainforest is home to more than half of the world's animals. All types of creatures are represented, from tiny insects to large mammals. As there is great competition for natural resources for the animals living in the rainforest, they have adapted to the environment for survival.

Human Impact on Rainforest

Human activities have severely disrupted the rainforests of the world. Millions of acres are lost each year to farming, logging (much of it illegal), mining, and other human endeavors. If unchecked, these activities could potentially eliminate the rainforests of most of Asia, Africa, and South America.

Rainforest Layers

There are four different layers in the Amazon rainforest:

  1. The Emergent Layer
  2. The Canopy Layer
  3. The Understory Layer
  4. The Forest Floor
