What is Malpractice?

Malpractice is any activity–intentional or otherwisethat is likely to undermine the integrity essential to coursework, exams, and other academic work. It includes plagiarism, collusion, fabrication or falsification of results, duplication of work, misconduct during an exam and anything else that could result in unearned or undeserved credit for those committing it.

Major Categories of Malpractice

The following are all examples of malpractice:

  • Plagiarism: The representation of the ideas or work of another person as your own
  • Collusion: Supporting malpractice by another person, as in allowing your work to be copied or submitted for assessment by another student
  • Duplication of Work: The presentation of same work for different assessment components and/or subject requirements
  • Disclosing Information: Sharing information with a fellow student or person about the content of an examination paper within 24 hours after the examination
  • Misconduct During an Examination: The possession of unauthorised material or devices
